Current Status of the National Zonta Birthing Kit Project
AusAID Grant

In July 2004 The Zonta Club of Adelaide Hills received a grant of $113,000 from AusAID to support the Zonta Birthing Kit Project. In August 2005 we received another $200,000 from AusAID for further support. We received another $200,000 in April 2007 and $200,000 in July 2008.

These grants came with conditions:

  • Distribution of the kits are made to countries in the Asia Pacific or Africa Regions which appear on the list of developing countries, as declared by the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
  • To access the AusAID grant, Zonta clubs also had to make a financial commitment.

How this financial commitment by Zonta clubs works:

  • This is a dollar for dollar grant. $1 from AusAID for $1 from Zonta.
  • As an additional concession, AusAID let the Project include the notional value of your assembly day labour (and the Committee’s administration hours) to a maximum of $0.50 cents in the Project’s $1 contribution. That’s why you record your hours worked on Assembly Days.
  • To access $1 of the AusAID grant we need to show AusAID that 50 cents has been deposited in the ‘Zonta Birthing Kit Fund’ bank account.

Why clubs need to send $800 for every 1600 kits they make:

Each $800 club contribution releases $1600 from AusAID.  Totalling $2400.

Every kit costs approx $1.50 to make and transport therefore1000 kits cost $1500

25% Cash Money  $ 100,000
25% Donations and service time  $ 100,000
50% AusAID money  $ 200,000

These funds are for a National Zonta Birthing Kit Project involving all 113 Zonta clubs.

HOW CAN YOUR CLUB BE A PART OF THIS WONDERFUL PROJECT?

EASY!

Step 1: CONTRIBUTE

Go to the Birthing Kit Foundation website and download the donation form
http://www.birthingkitfoundation.org.au/support.htm#donations and send a donation to the Foundation.

Step 2: ORGANISE

  1. Download and read the Birthing Kit Assembly Day Manual from the Birthing Kit Foundation website. All clubs participating in the Zonta Birthing Kit Project must use the manual
  2. Organise a venue, a date and approximately how many ZBK's you would like to make. Most clubs are making between 1000 and 2000 at their first Assembly Day
  3. A delivery address where the goods can be delivered on a weekday.
  4. Notify the Birthing Kit Foundation at info@birthingkitfoundation.org.au ASAP of the date of the Assembly Day, and how many ZBK's you hope to make. The Foundation needs 6 to 8 weeks notice if possible.

The finer details surrounding transport and destination of the Zonta Birthing Kits will be organized with each club as needed.

Do not buy any contents for the kits - the Foundation will supply all the contents.
